– Justin Timberlake (during COVID lockdowns)
Yeah, we genuinely don’t know what to say for this one. Imagine being a parent. Sob sob.
‘I spoke to a girl who had cancer and we were talking about how this is such a hard thing for her, but it taught her a big lesson on who her friends are and so much about life. She’s 18…’
Wait for it.
‘…And I was like, that’s how I feel.’
– Kim Kardashian
The name says enough, we’ve got no words.
‘I’m sorry but like, it’s a virus, I get it, like, I respect it but at the same time like, even if everybody gets it, like, yeah people are gonna die which is terrible but like, inevitable? I don’t know maybe I shouldn’t be doing this right now’
– Venessa Hudgens
We’re all in this together (but not really, I live in a mansion).
‘We are diverse… Audrina and Mischa have darker hair’
– Heidi Montag
Guys, brown people don’t exist. You’re an illusion.
We’re gonna stop here because we care about your mental health. We didn’t even mention the terrifying number of celebrities coming together to ‘empower’ us during quarantine with a cover of ‘Imagine’. Tears in my eyes as I’m writing this, really.
Why so Tone Deaf?
As fun as it is to just rant, it’s important to question where this disconnect comes from. Let’s be so honest, can you imagine never checking your bank account because you know you’re good? Or having a bathroom the size of a living room in your ten-bedroom mansion? We can’t. And that’s exactly the problem!
It’s like they’re living in a curated bubble where everyone agrees with them all the time, gives them whatever they want, and never delivers on the consequences for their actions. No wonder they’re confused when they interact with the rest of us. They don’t get it and maybe they just don’t want to.
Is it the pressure to perform? The fear of being outcast from the celebrity world? We don’t know (we kinda also don’t care). Their role in furthering out-of-touch culture might not be their fault entirely but that doesn’t mean they can’t check themselves.
Gen Z will continue to hold them accountable, but we all know change comes from within. Self-accountability is the way to grow. The question is: Do they care enough to put in the work?
